How to take back progress photos
The back is where a lot of change shows (lats, love handles, glutes), and the photo most people skip because they can’t see the screen.
Short answer
Stand in the same spot as your front photo, turn 180°, keep your feet in the same position and your arms slightly away from your sides, and use a self-timer. Light from the side or front shows back detail; overhead light exaggerates it.
How to do it
- Keep the phone exactly where it was for your front photo.
- Turn around on your floor marks; heels where your toes were.
- Arms 10–15 cm from your body, shoulders relaxed, head neutral.
- Use a 10-second timer or remote.
Relaxed vs flexed back
Keep a relaxed back as your main pose. If you’re training for a bigger back, add a back double-biceps or lat spread as its own label, and copy the exact arm height each time.
Lighting
Overhead light carves deep shadows that look like detail one week and vanish the next. Face away from a window so light hits your back evenly, or use the same lamp in the same place.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why are my back photos so inconsistent?
Usually the arms. Arms tight to the body hide the lats and love handles; arms out show them. Pick one and repeat it.
Can I see my back progress without photos?
Not really. Shirt fit across the shoulders and a shoulder measurement help, but photos are the only way to see it.
